I've been wondering is it possible to make your own Finder (OS 9

Yes.
Note that this is not simple. You have to handle many things as
many applications (such as applescript scripts can rely on the
Finder). Under OS9, I think it's the Finder which handles the Power
key (to display the "Do you really want to shutdown now?" dialog.
Speed can also be a problem if you plan to show a folder containing
many items with their correct icons.
Also, the Finder has many logical rules that are expected from an
user point.
But, yes, I already tried that. It worked (but was very simple, not
really reliable).
When one thinks of the "Finder" in Mac or "Explorer" on Windows, one
must consider all of the GUI between the user and the OS. To cover
all of the built in features is almost impossible. I would like to
know why Eric needs this control. There are ways to utilize the
resources in the Mac Finder, that REALbasic doesn't provide directly,
by using AppleScript calls within Rb.
