A ZIP compressed TIFF is a relative new PhotoShop addition to TIFF.
"Normal" TIFFs are LZW compressed.
I guess that QuickTime is not able to read ZIP compressed TIFFs.
A quick test using a LZW and a ZIOP compressed TIFF in RB does show
a similar result.
So you should not use ZIP compressed TIFFs.
PS. When saving a ZIP-TIFF there is a PhotoShop warning "ZIP
compression is not supported in older TIFF readers..."
I get that warning in Photoshop 7 - which is quite old (2002) and
certainly predates all other OS X software on my computer. I would
have thought that Quicktime 7, released this year, would finally
support ZIP-compressed TIFF.

After a *lot* of searching, here is what passes for an official list
of data formats supported by Quicktime:

Decidedly non-technical and deliberately vague.
For the benefit of the archive, RB applications can use the "sips"
command line tool to convert otherwise unreadable TIFF files into
cute, friendly PNGs or PDFs. It's fast and easy, and won't leave a
bitter aftertaste.
