So lets get this straight... You guys want RS to show everybody their
source code for the IDE and framework. Sure you don't want to get
them to
O.S. their compiler as well ? Im sure they'd love our help
debugging that.
Give me a break...
No. We didn't suggest they should give the code to anyone.
Go back and read Andy's post.
I concurred with him saying "Access to framework source is the kind
of thing that WOULD prompt me to pay for Developer membership"
I don't want the code to the IDE (others might)
Nor the code to the compiler (since that is, from what I know, still C
++ and I really never liked compiler writing)
But code to the framework classes (listboxes, editfields, etc) would
be great.
That's what you get with MFC and used to get with PowerPlant
In the case of PowerPlant, as Andy mentioned, the community often
improved or implemented things that got back in to the framework for
others to use
REAL only has a few engineers (from what I can count about 7 or 8)
And hundreds of verified bug reports that I can find and lord knows
how many additional feature requests
If there's some way the users of the 100,000 copies sold to date can
contribute back to REAL why not take advantage of it ?
REAL has a developer program that I used to belong to
It never had enough value for me to sign up again
The betas are a free for all and anyone can sign up which seems to
limit their usefulness in some ways
No one has such a vested interest in being part of the beta that they
really make a concerted effort to exercise the beta really thoroughly
Taking the developer program and adding something to it where you
could get access for a price might at least assure them that anyone
signing up is at least serious
And the person receiving the code would have a vested interest in
making sure they got value out of it in some way
And REAL would still be the final arbiter of any changes but might
gain a few hands that would pay for the privilege in the process
And, at this point it's just a suggestion that they are free to
ignore if they so choose
