Usually you'd leave it open until your program exits.  I'm trying to
think of why you'd ever want to NOT do that, but nothing comes to mind
that doesn't seem really contrived.

Maybe the program polls several serial devices ?
Or the program can connect to a device, configure it then disconnect and a new device is connected (I've had to do this for data loggers that are all configured identically)
