Subject: Re: Linux vs. Windows Encoding

I haven't done much comparison between the
two (win 98 and linux), in the area of performance. The gui is layed out the
same, although it looks like they used Tk libs, instead of the non-free Qt libs
that seem to be a higher quality gui, (and I prefer) but that's surface
gloss. I
usually use it from the commandline, or, rather, from a script. The output
quality of both seem to be comparable. At least, I haven't noticed anything
radically different. Encoding times are similiar. Perhaps I should do a
'study' comparing the two systems, for quality on the low end of encoding, and
time taken to encode a huge video file.
One thing about linux, not alot of video capture cards
are supported, because the vendors don't deem Linux as a very good market, so
the cards that have drivers, have been written by third party developers, that
sometimes have to resort to reverse engineering them. As far as stability is
concerned, you can't beat Linux. Even if an app is errant and locks up, it
doesn't take down the whole system. In fact, the only time I have had the whole
OS lock up, I was using the development kernel, which is inherently buggy, and
usually unstable, and doing something stupid. And you don't have to reboot when
you install things, except for the kernel, and maybe upgrading lib files.
The Linux g2 realplayer is still alpha, but works, and I (and a
whole lot
of others) am grateful to realnetworks for releasing it in the alpha stage. :o)
If you are looking for a stable OS, get linux. I have heard of
uptimes of 6
to 9 months. Be careful, tho, its not for everybody.
