When you're using SMIL and attempting to do pre-buffering in the background
there's many dangers abound in that area. However, this situation is one
that's simple enough to make it work. One thing the player looks at is if
the preroll in the next component of the SMIL file is longer than the length
of the current component (plus a little extra). If not it'll buffer both of
them before playing the first. Do an rmdump of the rm file and check out
its preroll, then make different length shockwave flash animations for
before it and you'll notice the relationship. (if you don't have rmdump just
try different shockwave file lengths and you'll see it happen)

Subject: simultaneous buffering questions
Hello, I am working on buffering a video clip while a shockwave animation
is running. So, first the animation loads and begins playing. While it
plays, the .rm file buffers in the background. By the time the animation
is done, the .rm file begins to play. Great!
However, it seems that sometimes, RealPlayer G2 first buffers the
animation, and then begins to buffer the .rm file as well, forcing the
viewer to wait much longer.
I have even tried different versions of the same shockwave file, and it
looks like there's some kind of relationship between frame count and file
size. Is there?
If you would like to see my question in action, point your browser to:

The first clip works fine, in fact the shockwave file is larger than the
second clip, which does not work. Please help! I'm trying to find the
optimum size for a shockwave animation that we could use as a short intro
to the .rm file. Thanks for any help you could give me.
