Subject: Novice seeks encoding help
Hello, All.
I'm new to video encoding and I'm trying to encode several scenes that range
in length from 30 seconds to 2 minutes. So far, I have been dissatisfied
with the video quality of the resulting RM files. I'm hoping that someone
with more experience can offer some suggestions on how I might improve the
quality.
The scenes contain both video and audio and they are being captured from an
S-VHS VCR using a Winnov Videum AV PCI card. The card is installed in a P200
with 64MB of RAM (I know, kinda wimpy for video capture, but it's the only
spare machine I have). I captured to AVI (320x240 pixels at 30fps) and then
used RealProducer Plus G2 to encode the files.
Although I am satisfied with the quality of the AVI files, the resulting RM
files seem too blurry to be useful in some cases, and in other cases, video
playback stops half way through while the audio continues (even when I watch
them from a machine on our LAN). Here are the settings that I used and the
results they produced:
All files share the following settings:
Target Audience:
28K Modem, 56K Modem
Audio Format
Voice with Background Music
Video Codec
RealVideo G2 with SVT

The highest quality video that I've been able to produce so far was encoded
at high bandwidth (Dual ISDN, DSL, LAN) using 15fps and Sharpest Image
Video. But even then, the video stops 3/4 of the way through the video.
Furthermore, I don't want to exclude low bandwidth users, so encoding
exclusively for high bandwidth isn't an option.
Any suggestions that you can provide would be greatly appreciated. You can
reach me directly via email at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Regards,
Darryl R.
