Strictly speaking - the BEST way to monitor the encoders might be the most
true-to-life way...set up a "monitoring machine" that has a RealPlayer
tuned to your stream and then rig a silence sensor (something any good
radio station will know about) to the sound card's output.

Of course - one does run into the issue of the silence sensor being tripped
if the monitoring terminal crashes (meaning the warning goes off even
though the encoder may be fine)....

I've seen this question before and I don't remember a terribly practical
solution for a Windows machine ever being mentioned but several said
something about how you can write a simple monitor script in Linux or Unix
that'll monitor and restart the encoder if it crashes. Don't remember
exactly how to write that script, though.

Subject: Monitoring Encoders
Hey Everyone,
Anyone know of a good way to monitor the encoders, we have a few problems
with 24x7 reliability of our encoders, we are encoding a few radio stations
and would like to know when the encoder bites the dust.
We have moved as many as possible to linux to help alleve the problem but
we
have a few with radio cards that I am having a heck of a time getting to
work under linux. Also isn't there a option to force a udp connection, are
there any drawbacks to encoding via udp instead of TCP so that if the link
gets interrupted that it'll continue to stream if the link comes back up?
Thanks,
