I am not sure but I think you may have mistakenly told google groups
that you wish to use the web interface instead of a mailing-list
interface, which may have required a gmail address.

It may not be easy to find, but I think there is a way you can tell it
to send emails (to an arbitrary address) instead of the web app.

I am pretty sure there are many non-gmail users registered to this list...
