What exactly is the difference between the old (1st generation)

How hard would it be to make OpenSim, ModRex and Naali all compatible
with the newer "SL 2" viewer?
If Second Life is transitioning towards their new "SL 2" viewer, then
shouldn't we make Naali "SL 2" compatible? So that it remains
compatible with SL?
I'm assuming that LL has added some additional features and
improvements to their "SL 2" viewer, and it might be good to maintain
backwards compatibility with SL (for the mostpart).
So at least content developers can easily develop content that can be
used in both OpenSim and SL.
I don't have a problem with abandoning the old "SL 1" viewer
technology, just as long as we fully support the newer "SL 2" viewer
technology (and remain backwards compatible with it).
The newer "SL 2" viewer has a much nicer UI, and since SL is heading
that direction, I think Naali should at least head that direction as
well (and try to maintain backwards compatibility with SL 2 viewer).

I really do like the idea of adding a "tattoo" layer (similar to what
realxtend was doing) and "Alpha masks" (the ability to make parts of
your body invisible).
So it seems like SL is just attempting to do some of the same things
that we were already working on, so it might not hurt to just try and
make Naali backwards compatible with the "SL Viewer 2" features.
Also the newer UI does look quite a bit nicer than the old UI, and
since Naali is being designed from the ground up, it might not be bad
to add a menu bar, and a collapse-able side panel that is compatible
with "SL Viewer 2", so that Naali could be used both in OpenSim,
realXtend, and in SL (and supports all the "SL Viewer 2" features and
functionality).
ModRex and OpenSim might need some updating, but it would be good to
maintain backwards compatibility with the "SL Viewer 2".
As content developers make new content (that is compatible with SL
Viewer 2) such as tattoos, and the "Alpha masks" features, it would be
good to make sure that content can be directly used both in OpenSim
and in SL. That way content is interchangeable between OpenSim and
SL, and content developers don't have to design content that is
completely different or incompatible.
I think maintaining backwards compatibility with the new "SL Viewer 2"
is a good feature to have in Naali. I also really do like the idea of
being able to use Naali in both Second Life and OpenSim, and realXtend.

At this point the SnowGlobe 2 svn is *supposed to* be 100% the same as
the closed Viewer 2.0... The idea is that SG2 will eventually be a
"webkit" for SL viewers.
Please reconsider supporting SL with naali. I've been chating with
Antont about you guys making a presentation to the AW Groupies sometime
in the next week or two. There's lots of pent up resentment about the LL
policy changes and you can probably recruit new developers from us, but
even so, don't just walk off. ENough pressure on LL should make them
behave more rationally and everyone wins if they do.
