thought I would share this recipe that came from my Great Grandmothers
cookbook she recieved in 1891. She used this for Easter and had it
marked in her book as 00 which my Great Aunt said ment was a good
recipe.
Easter Buns
Three cups sweet milk
flour to make thick batter
Set this aside as a sponge over night ( very much like using a sourdough
type base my note)
In the morning add 1 cup sugar,
1/2 cup butter melted
1/2 nutmeg
1 tsp salt
Flour enough to rool like a biscuit
Knead well set in warm place to rise for 5 hours Roll 1/2 inch thick and
cut into round cakes. Lay in rows in a buttered pan.Let stand for 1/2
hour then make a cross on each one with a knife. Imediately put into the
oven. Bake till light brown then bush over with a feather or soft bit of
clothe dipped into the white of an egg, beaten up stiff with white
surgar.
Note " these are the Hot Cross Buns of the London cries.
