Raisin Spice Squares

1 c. raisins
1 egg
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
2 c. sifted flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 c. chopped walnuts
2 c. confectioner's sugar
2 tbsp orange juice
1 tbsp butter, melted

        Simmer raisins in saucepan with 2 cups water 10 minutes. Pour into
large bowl. Cool to lukewarm. Add egg, shortening and sugar, mix well.
Add dry ingredients, mix well. Stir in walnuts.

        Pour into greased 13- by 9-inch baking pan. Bake at dg350 for 25
minutes. Cool on wire rack.

        Beat confectioners' sugar, orange juice and butter in bowl until
smooth. Spread over cookie layer. Cut into squares.
