MILE - HIGH BISCUITS   

      3 c. all-purpose flour
      2 tbsp. sugar
      1 tbsp. plus 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
      3/4 tsp. cream of tartar
      3/4 tsp. salt
      3/4 c. shortening
      1 egg, beaten
      3/4 c. milk

      Combine first five ingredients, mixing well. Cut in shortening with a 
pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal. Combine egg and milk; add 
to flour mixture, stirring well until dry ingredients are moistened. Turn dough 
out onto a lightly floured surface; knead 8 to 10 times. Roll dough to 1-inch 
thickness; cut with 2 1/2 inch biscuit cutter. Place biscuits on an ungreased 
baking sheet. Bake at 450 degrees for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Yield: 
15 biscuits.
