Creamed Spinach with Golden Bread Crumb Topping

1/8 c. (1/2 stick) butter
1 c. fresh bread crumbs, made from white bread
3 10-oz. pkgs. frozen spinach, thawed and squeezed dry
2 c. sour cream
1 c. whole milk
1 c. grated extra sharp Cheddar cheese
1/2 c. chopped onion
1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
1 large egg, beaten to blend

        Melt butter in large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add bread
crumbs, saute until golden--about 2 minutes. Set aside.

        Preheat oven to dg350. Butter an 8- by 8-inch glass baking dish. Mix
spinach, sour cream, milk, cheese, onion and nutmeg in large bowl.
Season with salt and pepper. Mix in egg. Pour mixture into prepared
baking dish. Can be made 6 hours ahead, cover chill. Top with bread
crumbs. Bake until set; about 30 minutes.

        Yield 9 servings.
