OK, so i've finally found the solution, the described problem only occuers with the following configuration: Apache Tomcat/5.5 1.6.0-b105 Sun Microsystems Inc. Linux 2.6.18-4-amd64 amd64
which is the default tomcat 5.5 installed using apt-get install on the Debian Etch distribution, having downloaded the tomcat 5.5-23 and installed it manually on both Debian and Mac OS X then deploying the Red5 War Java6, the streams work fine.
