“We have to be sensible. You can do all the running in the world and all the
ball work in the world with the physio, but it is a different ball game, a
different level of fitness, when you join in with your team-mates. It would be
devastating for him to miss out and, don’t get me wrong, I am sat here wanting
Wayne Rooney to take part in the tournament. But I am also sitting here wanting
fit players. If Wayne is not quite right tomorrow, we’ve got to bring Jermain
Defoe in. We need four fit strikers going into this tournament. There is no

[24] When a wince is a worry
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, June 7, 2006 by ed:
from the Times

'There was a sobering moment yesterday when, as he struck a 40-yard pass,
Rooney pulled his damaged foot back sharply. He winced momentarily — so, no
doubt, did Eriksson — but the forward was back a few hours later taking shots
and leaping high for headers, with only David James and Scott Carson, the
reserve goalkeepers, for company. On top of those encouraging signs, Rooney has
not put on weight, but a few red-faced sprints were clear evidence of a lack of
match fitness. Even if the scan is favourable, he will still need to be in a
good-enough condition to do himself justice.'

"I have certainly never played in an England team with such strong characters.
Maybe that was because I was young and looked up to them in the same way that
Theo Walcott and Aaron Lennon do now. But Seaman, Adams, Shearer, Gascoigne,
Ince, Platt, Sheringham, Pearce . . . there were a lot of powerful figures in
that team. But this is a better squad than that one. I relate it to the 1994
Manchester United squad. They had a lot of big players but to win the European
Cup in 1999 we had to take it to a different level technically. This squad is
technically better than at Euro 96 and it has some powerful figures in it as
well. You do need technical ability to win a World Cup; you can't just do it
through experience or power andstrength. You have to produce moments of magic
and we do have players within our squad who can light up games. Defensively, we
have the right ingredients. Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, Sol Campbell and Jamie
Carragher would be recognised as among the best centre-halves in Europe over
the last two or three years. They have all had a tournament under their belts.
The team that wins the World Cup is the one that defends the best. People talk
about the Brazil forward line in 2002 but they defended better than anyone
else. We cannot afford to concede two goals in the last minute like we did
against France in the European Championship. People will always point to us
going out against Portugal but had we drawn or won against France, we don't get
to play against Portugal in the quarter-final. We have to be strong and not
concede goals. That will be the platform we can build on."

"The lad has a broken foot and I don't know if anyone here has broken a bone in
their body but you do have problems recovering from it. It is not just the
actual break, it is the mental thing. He hasn't trained with the team yet. You
have to put this into reality. People are getting excited because he is
training with the physios but many players do that coming back from injury.
Physios can do many things but it is literally a different ball game when
you're actively involved with other players. It is a different level of fitness
and when you get to matches it's a different level of fitness again. There are
many obstacles before we even think of him getting into a match situation. I
don't think there will be many more World Cups for Gary Neville. This may be my
last chance and it is certainly my best chance."

Posted Wednesday, June 7, 2006 by ed:
'Medical men charged with assessing Wayne Rooney's healing metatarsal today
must tread carefully with the England striker because opposing defenders
certainly will not.

If there is any hint of risk to Rooney's health, any suggestion that the bone
could splinter again in the no-mercy hurly-burly of competitive combat, then
the surgeons gathering in Manchester today must advise England's head coach,
Sven-Goran Eriksson, that the forward must stay with them.

If the scan proves clear, as Eriksson believes it will be, then the doctors
have no choice but to allow Rooney to return to the England fold, with the
usual caveats about his regaining fitness before being catapulted into the
World Cup fray.

Rooney mesmerised the cameras yesterday with some runs and occasional shots,
yet he is understandably at least a fortnight away from full fitness, even if
today's scan reveals he has recovered clinically. Rooney's hunger for
involvement with England is palpable. As well their protective padding,
Rooney's boots have the cross of St George stitched into them. His frustrated
desire to join in training yesterday hung thick in the air over Mittelberg.

After some running with the fitness coach, Ivan Carminati, Rooney disappeared
into the physio's tent, but could not resist peeking out, watching ruefully as
England went through their paces. When Sol Campbell missed a shot that sent a
drink bottle flying through the air and soaking John Terry, Rooney creased up
in laughter. He wanted to be out there, enjoying the banter, nutmegging Wayne
Bridge, preparing to take on Paraguay.

Eriksson, and the rest of the England squad, will be touching every piece of
wood around their Black Forest home that Rooney flies back tonight. "Wazza" is
not only admired as a fabulous, match-winning footballer, but also liked as a
funny, and popular member of the squad.

Only the harshest of heart would deny such a special talent the chance to
parade such sumptuous gifts on a World Cup stage. Yet the decision to allow a
half-fit Rooney to remain would be easier if Eriksson had not badly erred by
selecting only four strikers in the first place. Even if Rooney sails through
today's scan, and poor Jermain Defoe is sent home, the flesh, blood and sinew
that make up England's striking options look vulnerable.

Even if Rooney returns to Baden Baden this evening, Eriksson must be cautious
with a naturally ebullient character striker in training. As Gary Neville
wisely stressed yesterday, other niggles stalk those returning from metatarsal
injuries, and Rooney's pre-match calisthenics are distinctly old-school. The
"ave it" punt is hardly designed to warm up hamstrings gently.

Everyone hopes that Eriksson's conviction that Rooney will be training with him
tomorrow proves correct. But today's decision must be about what is best for
Rooney, not Eriksson. The Swede disappears over Albion's horizon in a month and
does not need to pick up the pieces should any mishap befall Rooney.

Manchester United's manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, will have to look after Rooney
if he takes a tough tackle in training, or in a match, that damages his
metatarsal. Once again, it needs stressing that the decision about Rooney must
be made by those best qualified, by the medical men, not the management men.'

[20] FIFA to act like Acas?
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, June 7, 2006 by ed:
from Telegraph

'England and Manchester United have agreed that a Fifa-approved doctor will be
given the final say on Wayne Rooney's fitness if there is a disagreement
between the two sides following the crucial scan on his broken foot today.

Although Rooney showed more remarkable signs of recovery during two training
sessions with England here yesterday, United remain extremely cautious about
his chances of playing in the World Cup.

He returns to Manchester this morning on a private flight from Karlsruhe
airport at 11am. After that he will be taken to the Whalley Range clinic for
the scan which will determine whether he will be fit enough to play in Germany.

He will be accompanied by England's Swedish doctor, Leif Sward, who will hold a
meeting with his United counterpart, Tony Gill, once the results of the scan
are known in the evening.

But The Daily Telegraph understands that if a dispute develops between United
and the Football Association over the results of the scan, then the FA have
agreed that a third party, appointed with the blessing of Fifa, will make the
final decision.

United believe that he should be allowed to return to Germany only if the scan
shows he has a chance of playing in the second round. Eriksson has said he
would include Rooney even if he were fit only for the final.

But after two impressive sessions at England's training camp yesterday,
expectations are high that the 20-year-old striker will get the all-clear.

After a morning workout with England fitness coach Ivan Carminati, Rooney
returned to the Mittelberg training camp in the afternoon for another 45-minute
session. He worked with goalkeepers David James and Scott Carson and
physiotherapist Gary Lewin, bending shots around a dummy wall and practising
his heading from crosses.

Rooney emerged from the earlier workout to say his foot felt fine and Eriksson
said: "I've been saying for one month that I'm sure he will take part in the
World Cup. He is 300 per cent - even more - confident that he will play."

'WAYNE ROONEY has told Sven Goran Eriksson that he is 300 PER CENT confident of
playing in the World Cup.

England striker Roon, 20, will jet back to Manchester today for the crucial
final scan on his busted metatarsal.

But he was upbeat yesterday after coming through an intensive training session
near the team HQ here.

After drilling balls with his injured right foot, Rooney was asked how he was
doing. Speaking for the first time since being named in the squad for Germany,
he replied: “It feels fine.”

Three Lions boss Eriksson said: “I’m confident he will take part in the World
Cup and he is 300 per cent con- fident that he will play. I have been saying
for one month that I’m sure he will take part in the World Cup.

“But I look forward to the point when we don’t discuss scans and Rooney’s foot
any more.”

Manchester United ace Roo was training again yesterday afternoon and spent 45
minutes practising free-kicks with BOTH feet.

Then back-up keepers David James and Scott Carson took it in turns between the
sticks as he had a spell heading crosses towards the net.

The session was closely monitored by England physio Gary Lewin.'

"He's a midfield player, we can teach him to be more complete, to defend
better, and to get more intensity in the game. He's bright in the way he thinks
football, technically he's fantastic, and it's just a point to get the
intensity of the English game. Everybody was in love when he trained here when
I first took charge, not just me but the players who were amazed at such a
young boy coming from nowhere and training with us with such quality. You saw
him in the African Cup playing like a giant in the middle of players like
Jay-Jay Okocha, Yobo, Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto'o, at an absolutely
unbelievable level. We know the level he can be. Diarra, Jon Obi, Kalou, we are
speaking about the best young players in the world. We are having great, great
boys for the future. Jon was without playing and training for a long, long
time, it's not easy, but we look forward to helping him. The boy is fantastic
and I hope to be proud of him in the way I am with Diarra for the way he has
been playing."

Mikel

"Everybody's got his style of play. I'm a midfield player who just wants to go
in there and do my stuff. I'm not a defensive player, I like making the team
play, get into the game, keep moving around, keeping looking for the ball and
make sure the team plays well. My next target is to start playing again. I've
not been playing for a long time but I've been doing my thing to keep fit. I
think I'm pretty fit but we'll have to see in a match situation. It's been a
really, really difficult time for me, but I'm really happy the way everything
is going now."

"It is I who makes decisions in terms of the quality and profile of a player,
but I don't get involved in the business side at all - it is he (Abramovich)
who makes the decisions to pay X or Y. But the best players in the world don't
make the best teams, you have to work hard to be successful. There are clubs
whose future is affected by the investments they make, but it is different at
Chelsea. It is a club that relies on just one person. It is the money of
Abramovich that funds it. I am a believer in having a squad of 24 players - two
for each position, not of buying for the sake of buying or buying to prevent a
player going to a rival club. I always try to ensure that I keep a balance with
the things I do. The only balance I have lost at Chelsea is the amount of money
we spent on some transfers, but it is Abramovich's money."

[16] Daniel Taylor in Guardian on will he, won't he
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, June 7, 2006 by ed:
'Wayne Rooney was dripping with sweat as he was finally coaxed off England's
training pitch in the Black Forest and when he flies home today for the
decisive x-ray on his injured foot he expects to be told he will be allowed to
play in the World Cup. Asked if he anticipated good news, he nodded in
agreement before replying: "It feels fine."
Rooney clearly believes he can defy medical opinion and he seemed determined to
prove as much with a rigorous work-out on Buhlertal's ground, pinging the ball
40 yards at a time and going through a series of drills with the fitness coach
Ivan Carminati. His first public training session since breaking his foot
brought television crews from all over the world to south-west Germany. Away
from the cameras, he returned with the goalkeepers David James and Scott
Carson, and the physio Gary Lewin, for another intensive run-out in the
afternoon, with a heavy emphasis on shooting practice.

Sven-Goran Eriksson reported the Manchester United forward was "300% more
confident" and the goalkeeper Paul Robinson blew out his cheeks in admiration
as he reflected on one shot that had beaten him. "It was some volley," he
enthused.
Hopes are rising but the final decision depends on whether today's scan reveals
Rooney's fractured metatarsal has fully healed. It is 39 days since he "felt a
pop" and crumpled in a heap at Chelsea and, according to United, there is a
danger that everyone in the England camp, from Eriksson downwards, has adopted
the mindset that Rooney's involvement is all but guaranteed. A very different
viewpoint can be obtained at Old Trafford, where United have emphasised that it
is far from cut and dried, a message Gary Neville reiterated last night.

"You have to put this into reality," said Neville. "He's got a broken bone in
his body and it is not just the actual break, it's the mental thing. There are
other things that surround breaking a bone, such as picking up little niggles
coming back.

"People are getting excited because he is training with the physiotherapists,
but many players do that coming back from injury. Physiotherapists can do many
things but it is a different ball game when you're actively involved with other
players. It's a different level of fitness and when you get to matches it's a
different level of fitness again. There are many obstacles before we even think
of him getting into a match situation."

Sir Alex Ferguson's priority, justifiably, is his planning for next season and
Rooney not doing himself any long-term damage in his desperation to be fit. If
the latest bulletin reveals anything other than, in Ferguson's words, an
"absolute recovery" strong pressure will be exerted on the 20-year-old to
withdraw of his own accord. Fifa's rules dictate that, in theory, there is
nothing United can do to force the issue but, if necessary, Ferguson will
involve his chief executive David Gill, who has just been voted on to the
Football Association's main board.

One scenario is that the matter will be deferred again, with another scan
already pencilled in for a week today. If so, Eriksson would have to decide
whether to gamble that Rooney makes it and send home Jermain Defoe, here as
back-up, when he submits his final squad to Fifa on Friday.

Nobody will know for certain until the results come back - this evening at the
earliest - but Eriksson is no longer talking of a miracle. "He looks OK to me,"
said England's coach. "We have to let the surgeons and the specialists have
their say but I'm sure he will take part in the World Cup."

Neville is not so certain. "I want Wayne to take part in ... but, equally, I
want to make sure we have 11 fit players. If Wayne is not quite right we have
to bring in Jermain. We need four fit strikers going into this tournament and
there can be no room for sentiment. I want Wayne to be here but I want fit
players alongside me, just as they would want a fit right-back."

“Peter Lawwell (Celtic’s chief executive) told me there are one or two things
that they want to look at following his scan. But he said they will make an
offer in the next few days. We understand the situation. Celtic are trying to
cover their backs and make sure there will be no future problems with Quinton.
And whatever they pay they want to make sure they get value for money. He's
interested in Celtic. He was impressed by the people there and the size of the
club and that's why he is holding out. But we just want to sort out his future
as soon as possible."

[13] Meeting Wayne Rooney
---------------------------------

http://www.watfordobserver.co.uk/news/localnews/display.var.783662.0.youngster_wins_chance_to_meet_wayne_rooney.php

'MOST football fans can only dream of representing their country and receiving
a trophy from their hero, but for one young boy from Watford that dream is to
become a reality.

Ryan O'Sullivan, 10, of Gammons Lane, north Watford, is one of just 14 boys
from across the country to be chosen to represent England at the Asda Kids Cup.

Ryan was the quickest to dribble round a maze of cones and score a goal in a
supermarket car park in north Watford.

He was one of four Watford kids to win through the first stage as heats were
staged at supermarkets across the UK.

And he has now been selected to represent England by football league coaches
during trials at Griffin Park football ground, home of league one side
Brentford FC.

However, for Ryan the real reward will be the chance to meet his hero Wayne
Rooney, who will present the trophy to the victorious side.

He said: "I want to meet David Beckham and most of all Wayne Rooney, but I
think I'd be too nervous to ask him anything.

"It was hard to get through and now I'm looking forward to all of it.

"I want to be a footballer when I grow up and I want to play for Manchester
United and England."

Ryan, who attends Holy Rood Infant School, in Greenbank Road, Watford, supports
Manchester United and currently plays for Sun Postal under-10 football team
where he was their top scorer this season for the forth time in a row.

He is currently trying to beat his record of 241 keep-ups.

The Asda Kids Cup will take place after the World Cup at an as yet unconfirmed
football league ground and will feature boys' and girls' teams from England,
Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Ryan's mum, Tina, said: "He is so very excited he's driving me mad.

"It is just fantastic, he beat thousands of other kids.

"They are only taking 28 kids on the trip and I think it's great that a child
from Watford can go.

"I think it's great for the town"

Andrew Jones, from Asda, said: "The kids who have gone forward have been
selected by coaches and will represent their country.

"It is a nice prize and to have the cup presented by Wayne Rooney will be
great."

[11] Rooney former team-mate

'AS Wayne Rooney took his first steps towards winning his World Cup fitness
fight, a former teammate was urging Sven Goran Eriksson to take the gamble on
his selection.

Sean O'Hanlon played with the Manchester United star in Everton's youth team
back in 2002/03 and, after witnessing his magic at close quarters, believes
Rooney should be in the squad for Germany if there is the tiniest chance he can
feature.

England's talisman Rooney has been recovering well from his metatarsal injury
and took part in running and ball work at England's training camp in Carrington
for the first time on Thursday.

A scan tomorrow will ultimately decide his fate but as far as County Ground
skipper O'Hanlon is concerned, no stone should be left unturned to ensure he
plays some part in the summer bonanza.

He said: "I was playing in the Everton under-19 team when a 15-year-old Rooney
was also in our squad.

"He was a substitute quite a lot in those days because obviously he was still
at school, while all of us all were on YTS and were getting paid.

"But he was still brought to all the games and often came off the substitutes
bench to produce a bit of magic to win the game.

"It is the same this summer. If there is the chance of him playing at any stage
then we have to take him. He is our match winner. "

While Rooney has emerged as one of the World's greatest prospects, former
England youth international O'Hanlon has been forced to drop down into the
lower leagues to pursue his dream career.

He said: "It is no surprise to see him where he is. Even at 15 you could tell
he was going to be something special.

"He was always physically well built and so could easily handle the physical
side of the game. He has a tremendous shot, great pace and unbelievable skills.

"Being honest I can't think of a bad attribute about him. He is the all-round
footballer."

O'Hanlon is currently in negotiations with Swindon about a new two-year
contract and will be watching the World Cup back in his Liverpool home after
undergoing an operation on his knee injury yesterday.

He said: "With Wayne Rooney in the squad, England have a great chance of
winning the World Cup, I really believe that. Without him they will struggle.

"They still have a very decent midfield and defence but I just think they would
be lacking that bit in attack.

"With Rooney and Owen in the team England would have the goals in them to win
it all."

Posted Wednesday, June 7, 2006 by ed:
Photographs of Rooney training have increased hopes that he will be fit to play
at least some part, and Paddy Power have him at just 3-10 to play in the World
Cup. He is 9-4 to play no part.

The odds about him turning out in England’s first match against Paraguay on
Saturday have plummeted to 28-1 from 200-1 ten days ago, but that looks
hopelesly optimistic.

More likely is an appearance in the last 16, the first of the knock-out stages,
which is offered at 7-4 (from 3-1). Rooney has also been cut from 12-1 to 9-1
to be England’s top scorer in the tournament.

Paddy Power’s book on which game will see Rooney’s first appearance in the
World Cup (in game order): 28-1 Paraguay, 8-1 Trinidad & Tobago, 7-2 Sweden,
7-4 Last 16, 4-1 Quarter Final, 16-1 Semi Final, 25-1 Final, 9-4 None.

[9] Times on Rooney injury experts
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, June 7, 2006 by ed:
'While hopes of quick recovery from Rooney have been raised by his sprightly
displays in England training, doubts remain. Jon Fearn, the physiotherapist of
Reading, the winners of the Coca-Cola Championship last season, urged caution.

“The big difficulty is trying to read between all the hype,” Fearn said
yesterday. “It all comes down to risk, the risk of refracturing the bone. And
there is such a fine line between high risk and low risk.

“Any period in the recovery process is crucial, but it is even more crucial
(now) because someone has to make a decision. Will he be fit to play in the
next couple of weeks? Or could he come back too soon? And in the days ahead,
how will the bone cope with the loading on it?” Fearn believes that how Rooney
feels is a vital part of the equation. “We sometimes rely too much on the
scan,” Fearn said. “It is just a tool in the decision making and you should
sometimes treat the player rather than the scan. Talking to Wayne is just as
important. Seeing him prancing around tells us that he is feeling confident and
comfortable. If he felt any pain, he obviously wouldn’t be doing that.”

Paul Timson, a London-based chartered physiotherapist, agreed. “There is the
clinical assessment on a daily basis, but you also have to take into account
how the player himself is feeling,” he said. “My initial thought was that he
would be up against it, but from what I’ve seen on television, he seems OK. But
then you only see perhaps ten seconds out of what could have been a ten-minute
session or more.”

Fearn accepts that there are still questions to answer. “Wayne has not done any
contact or high intensity work yet,” he said. “If a defender block-tackles him,
how will he react? “You could say that 60 per cent of Joe Bloggs is better than
100 per cent of Fred Bloggs but if Wayne refractures the bone, you then have a
healing process on top of a healing process. It would take longer to heal and
he could struggle to make the start of next season.”

[8] Nike want Rooney fit
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, June 7, 2006 by ed:
from Times

'AS A nation waits today for the results of the scan on the fourth metatarsal
of Wayne Rooney’s right foot, Nike will be saying a prayer, too. Rooney’s good
health is as important to the global sports manufacturer as it is to the fate
of England in the World Cup finals.
If Rooney is pronounced fit today — at least enough to retain his place in the
England squad — Nike will try to ensure that one of its most famous clients is
able to make a playing appearance in Germany. It has even considered a
modification of his specially-designed Total 90 Supremacy boots in an effort to
protect his injury.

Industry sources said yesterday that such a decision may be taken in
conjunction with the England and Manchester United medical staff. If it was
necessary, a cushioned layer could be added to his right boot.

If Rooney is given the all-clear to return to the England camp in Baden-Baden,
Nike has plans to personalise his boots for when he plays, albeit possibly not
until the knockout rounds. He will wear a blue-and-silver pair with the “home”
kit and a red-and-white version with the “away” kit.

In line with several of his team-mates, Rooney is likely to have the cross of
St George and the date of the match on his boots. He might also have the name
of Coleen, his fiancée, added to the T90, which is also worn by Rio Ferdinand,
the central defender, and Paul Robinson, the goalkeeper.

Rooney fractured his metatarsal when he wore the boots for the first time in
United’s 3-0 defeat by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge six weeks ago. There were
claims that the lightweight boot could have contributed to the injury but Nike
believes that it was coincidental.

Ronaldo, the Brazil striker, who wears the company’s Mercurial Vapour model
favoured by Thierry Henry, the France and Arsenal forward, has suffered from
blisters while breaking in a new pair of boots in training this week. However,
he is expected to play in Brazil’s opening group F match against Croatia on
Tuesday.'

Posted Wednesday, June 7, 2006 by ed:
'SIR Alex Ferguson could end Wayne Rooney's involvement with England in the
World Cup if he is unhappy with results of his foot scan tomorrow.
The whole of England rejoiced at pictures of the Manchester United wonderkid
volleying a ball in training with Sven Goran Eriksson's squad yesterday.
And England medical staff have expressed hope Rooney will be able to sit on the
bench in the group match against Sweden in Cologne on June 20.
But Old Trafford boss Fergie is believed to be increasingly concerned about the
treatment his £28million striker has received.
And if a scan on the fractured bone in his foot in Manchester tomorrow fails to
show good signs of recovery, then the Scot could intervene.
Man United physios must make sure his broken metatarsal is ready to withstand
the impact of a fierce tackle before they will allow him back into full
training.
One medical expert feels Rooney could suffer serious long-term damage to his
foot if he plays in the Finals before his foot heals properly.
Dr Thomas Stuttaford said: "He would be lucky to have a sound union of the bone
within three months of the fracture and it might well take six months to heal
properly, so its a gamble.
"But with the World Cup imminent it is a gamble many people would expect
England to take."

[4] Rio doesn't remember his name?

'Whatever happens on the pitch during England's opening World Cup game, we can
always have a giggle afterwards at Rio Ferdinand's practical-joke TV show.
(Hilariously, we hear, he dupes Peter "Do The" Crouch into buying property in
Dubai, and convinces poor Wayne his dog's dead.) But Rio doesn't find it quite
so funny, it seems, when the boot's on the other foot. Late the other evening,
our hero was asking for food in Est Est Est in Alderley Edge. Exhausted teen:
"The kitchen closed at 10, sir." Millionaire Man U and England defender: "Don't
you know who I am?" (repeats). Exhausted teen (eventually): "Why, have you
forgotten something?" Sadly if, perhaps, unsurprisingly, we hear the lad lost
his job soon afterwards.'

[34] MEN on Ruud
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, June 6, 2006 by ed:
'UNITED will dismiss bargain hunters looking to snap up Ruud van Nistelrooy on
the cheap.
The Reds will not let the Dutchman leave Old Trafford for less than £15m.

United's top brass have assessed the opening moves in the summer transfer
market in the Premiership and have decided that top scorer van Nistelrooy won't
be sold for peanuts following the breakdown of his relationship with manager
Sir Alex Ferguson.

The first movements of the close season have seen Chelsea stump up £30m for AC
Milan's Andriy Shevchenko.

Shevchenko is rated the best striker in the world but with 150 Premiership
goals behind him van Nistelrooy's CV is only a shade less impressive.

The Dutch ace will be 30 in July but Shevchenko will reach the milestone
himself just three months later at the end of September.

If Shevchenko is worth £30m then United's hierarchy believe anything less than
£15m for Ruud would be unacceptable.

Equally they have looked at the £8.5m that Everton have shelled out to bring
Crystal Palace's England stand-by Andy Johnson back to the top division.

Johnson's one stay in the Premiership saw him rack up an impressive 21 goals
for Palace in the 2004-05 campaign.

Van Nistelrooy has beaten that figure or been just one goal short of it in four
of his five seasons in England with the Reds.

Ruud's situation is still very much up in the air. Cristiano Ronaldo has said
the training ground dust-up with van Nistelrooy that sparked the end of season
row with Ferguson and the Dutch striker's expulsion from the squad for the game
against Charlton and Roy Keane's testimonial was a "storm in a tea cup".

But since that apparent possible route back, van Nistelrooy has said that he'll
make his decision when his agent has something concrete to put in front of him.'

[33] Reuters on Rooney

Posted Tuesday, June 6, 2006 by ed:
'Striker Wayne Rooney gave England's World Cup hopes a boost on Tuesday when he
began a training session with the rest of the squad.

Rooney, who broke his foot on April 29, took part in the first 20 minutes of
the session at their training base near Baden Baden, to the delight of coach
Sven-Goran Eriksson.

The 20-year-old Manchester United forward then did a mixture of running,
sprinting and ball work on his own with England fitness coach Ivan Carminati.
Rooney will have a scan on his foot in Manchester on Wednesday.

"I think he looks very good," Eriksson told a news conference as his team
prepare for Saturday's Group B opener against Paraguay. They also face Trinidad
and Tobago and Sweden in the group.

Eriksson, who has until 24 hours before that game to keep Rooney or replace him
with standby Jermain Defoe, said he expected the scan result by Thursday
morning at the latest.

"It's totally up to the surgeons, the specialists, the doctors and physios. I
can't judge it," he said.

"But I've always said I think he will be available, that he will take part in
the World Cup. And I still believe it very, very strongly."

Goalkeeper Paul Robinson was also buoyed by Rooney's presence, saying: "He did
the warmup today -- he's been training with the physios for the last couple of
days.

"Looking at him now, it's looking positive. It's gives us a boost obviously."

'Gary Neville expects to have fully recovered from his hamstring injury in time
to face Paraguay on Saturday.

Neville missed England's final warm-up match against Jamaica at Old Trafford on
Saturday but took part in Tuesday's warm-up in Germany.

"I'm happy with it. I think it's settled down," said Neville.

"I'd have liked to have taken part in the Jamaica game but it wasn't to be.
Hopefully I can train this week and be ready for Saturday."

Neville, who missed the 2002 finals due to a broken metatarsal, was eager to
make the point that Rooney will not necessarily be passed fit tomorrow.

"I was taken to the specialist thinking I would be given the all-clear, but it
wasn't to be and it's not always what you think," the full-back added on Sky
Sports News.

"I was jogging prior to my scan but I was told I had to have an operation four
days later."

He also urged supporters and media to calm their expectations with regard to
Rooney, adding: "The lad has had a broken foot - let him rehabilitate."

England lost their Euro 2004 opener to France, despite leading until the
closing minutes.

"We had chances to make it 2-0 against France and didn't take them. This time
we have got to take them," Neville stressed.

"We know how to lose. We know where the possible pitfalls could occur."

At 31, Neville admits: "It could be my last tournament. I am aware time is
against me, certainly to play another World Cup."

Should he face Paraguay, Neville will be winning an 80th cap.

"I want those caps that I have amassed to count for something, and they will
only count for something if we win something."

"It's encouraging in one sense but my experience, in 2002, whilst in
Manchester, recovering and recuperating from my broken foot, I went to see the
specialist and thought I'd be given the go-ahead to start training. Sometimes
it's not what you think. We have to wait until tomorrow to see what the experts
think. It's not always what it appears. I was jogging prior to my scan in 2002
and was then told I'd have to have an operation four days later. I hope it
doesn't happen to Wayne as everyone wants him to take part in the World Cup.
Until the surgeons meet tomorrow, then I don't think anyone will know for sure.
He hasn't trained for five or six weeks and we all get a bit carried away in
this country. The lad has a broken foot - leave him be, let him rehabilitate
and let him be looked after by the right people. They'll make the decision
along with him. It's not important if the journalists or players encourage him."
