Geez, it must have come across that I don't know what I'm doing. :)
I have helped build (and now administer) a large wan network of
(redhat) linux servers offering local LAN and client dialup ISP
services over a large regional area. I also manage a large server
farm, including full-scale DNS and mail servers and so on. The
network includes 40 remote sites in towns spread over something like
400,000 sq km. So I really do know something about dns and
everything else that goes with it.
However, I am having to deal with weird situations where DNS might
be unavailable (or "contradictory") for some reason. For example,
if a router goes down (bloody ciscos!) then we need to get into the
server via a "back door" - and things like sshd don't like it at all
if it can't resolve IPs. I also have to deal with using two dns
servers on the network, one for the "public" address space, another
for our "private" internal network. There are all sort of little
tweaks with things like /etc/resolv.conf that I have needed to do to
make things work smoothly, and resorting to /etc/hosts is one such
kludge I am using in some situations.
This last problem I have been experiencing was mostly more of an
annoyance than anything else, but turning multi on in hosts.conf
looks like the solution.
Thanks all.
Cheers
Tony
