First of all, what version of Linux RH are you running? Assuming that you are
running 5.1 (earlier version might work too!), run Xconfigurator, which will write a XF86Config file to /etc/X11/. The OS should automatically probe your video card. If it does not, use SuperProbe (note the CAPS) to find out what kind of video card you have. Write the info. down, including the amount of VRAM.
NOTE: Exit out of Xconfigurator before running SuperProbe.

How much memory do you have on the matrox card? You need more than 2MB
VRAM to run at higher resolution. In Xconfigurator, check ALL the 16bit option. Leave the rest uncheck. Start X windows system using startx.
Within X, use CTRL and ALT and + to switch video res. mode.
Give this a try first, if it does not work, you might have to define a customized video card, monitor type resolution, and rate of refresh.
