Hmm. Never had any problems with my nameserver dying here on 5.0.
Sometimes I think these things are more responsive to the phase of the
moon than to any logical rhyme or reason. 

Only thing I can think of: did you upgrade all your packages to the latest
from Red Hat?

Of course, if 4.2 is working for you, go for it! Nobody ever said you had
to be bleeding edge.
