I have RH 5.0 with kernel 2.0.31 installed. I have upgraded
Usernet and installed Netscape Communicator 4.04. When I
start Netscape, the navigator browser starts up fine, but
when I subsequently start up the communicator mail/news-
reader, I run into a bit of a...problem. When I select to
start the mailbox, there is a LOOONG delay at which time
I wonder if netscape has frozen. The mouse pointer goes
to a watch/clock and remains that way for a while. If I
move the navigator window OR if I open up another app
window (I just opened a telnet session to get my mail
since Netscape didn't seem to want to), the navigator
browser goes blank. No text, no buttons, just the outline
of the browser. It is as if the Navigator screen refresh/
repaint isn't working while everything else is fines
This occurred just now as I was trying to get my mail from
my ISP. As I was reading mail via a telnet session with
pine, netscape was sitting in the background with a blank
face and no sign of the mailbox window. FINALLY, as I
was scanning messages in pine, the netscape window came
back and the mailbox window appeared and I was then
able to access my mail via communicator.
Has anyone else experienced this inordinately long delay
before the mailbox starts in Communicator 4.04?
On a related note:
Sometimes, too, just trying to start netscape for the first
time in a session nothing happens. I either select netscape
from a menu or type netscape in an xterm and nothing happens.
If I start Top, I see no sign of netscape starting. If I
wait long enough, it does appear that netscape will eventually
start.
What could be causing the tremendous delay in starting netscape,
or once having started it, the tremendous delay in getting the
mail window to start?
