If you are talking about MS SQL Server, then I am afraid that yes it
only runs on NT.  However there are plenty of good SQL database
servers for Linux.  I like Postgresql, but there is always mysql, and
a host of others.  If you don't mind commercial databases there is
Solid, Yard, and any number of others (get a Linux journal and add
them up).

It could (should) be possible to move whatever database they are
running on MS SQL over to something that will run on Linux.  It would
certainly be cheaper (and more powerful) then what he is running now.
The front end for the free Linux databases don't look near as pretty
however (don't know about Solid and the commercial databases).
