SQL stands for a Structured Query Language and is a language for
manipulating databases. It was originated by IBM but I believe there's
even an ISO standard covering it these days. Lots of manufacturers
produce database engines which understand SQL. There are several
options available for Linux.
Microsoft SQL Server on the other hand is a Microsoft product and (AFAIK)
only runs on Microsoft platforms.
