General reply to a bunch of posts to this thread:
You can play Doom 1 or Doom 2 in Linux, just get the shareware version for
Linux and copy in the appropriate .wad files. One point though: you need to
go through the main menu fairly quickly, before it starts playing the
demos, if you do this. Otherwise it looks for the shareware demos and will
lock up the game.
There are a few versions of Quake for Linux:
squake - for SVGAlib
xquake - for X11
glquake - for 3dfx Voodoo (uses Mesa, other GL chipsets are kind of iffy
here.)
There are also versions of QuakeWorld (Quake enhanced for Internet play) in
the same three flavors.
Unfortunately, Quake 1 was packed with a DOS install program, which needs
to be run to get the .pak files for the registered version.
Quake 2 is the recently released sequel to Quake. Last time I checked MY
CD, the Linux version does not come on the disc. However, id was more
thoughtful of Linux gamers here, and all the data files are sitting
unpacked on the CD-ROM, so you simply need to copy a few directories over.
You only need to get the Linux binaries off the Internet. Q2 comes with
the aforementioned three versions.
FWIW, I've successfully gotten all of these to work properly under Linux,
and I'd be glad to answer any further questions.
