I think Mozilla is different in this aspect (upgrade vs. fresh installation). Last time I checked their Web site (when I downloaded version 1.3 of Mozilla), I think there was an instruction to remove older versions before installing 1.3.

Hi there,
I was wondering if there is any effects on redhat design of
consolidating packages and default software if it is to be upgraded
manually. For example, Mozilla 1.3.1 is available for installation, but
should remove the current installed one first, or just get the new
package and perform a new installation?

I normally just do a rpm -Uvh to install upgrades. It works most of the time.
In the case of Mozilla, you will need to do something like rpm -Uvh *.rpm
(assuming the directory ONLY has the files needed to upgrade) so that the
dependencies can be resolved for the upgrade. Mozilla will require several rpms.
