One thing that was nice for me (in spite of the longish > 2 week
delay to get the drive back):
I had an WD EIDE 1.2GB drive that I bought about 2.5 years ago.
It started making the clank clank sound and eventually died
(the WD guy recognized the sound right away when I "sang" it).
It was still under warranty, and WD didn't require me to
dig out the original receipts or anything.
The good news was that they don't make 1.2GB drives anymore,
so I got a 2.5GB drive as a replacement. No note or anything,
just a new drive. Then, about 3 months (!!) later, someone from
WD called to see if the drive was working out OK for me.
I don't think much of the quality of WD drives; too bad there
are so few brands to choose from. I've heard bad stories about
every vendor, and for awhile thought Fujitsu might be the most
reliable, but am now leaning towards Seagate. Nothing scientific
about my comparison, except that the idea of "150000 MTBF" or
somesuch is a pretty worthless marketing ploy.
