Downloading linux seems a daunting task but it is really quite simple once you learn
what
to get. I suspect that the individuals asking about it are attempting to download to a
windows box and install from there.
My first install was done by downloading the slackware distro (it was done via 33.6
dial-up
connection) onto a win95 box. Basically, it required downloading _disk sets_ to a
directory dedicated to linux and setup so that each disk set is written to a
sub-directory
of the same name. Ex. Slack contains disk sets a1 - a9 (along with many others). I
created a Linux directory on my d: drive under windows, then subdirectories under this
labeled a1 - a9. I then proceeded to download the contents of the ftp directories a1
- a9
into the subdirectories created on my drive. Each directory would represent one floppy
disk if you were loading the OS from floppies. Once all the disk sets are downloaded,
you
create your boot and root image floppies (which is documented with a README or HOWTO
at the
site from you are downloading the disk sets), re-boot the computer with the boot image
floppy in the drive ( inserting the root image when prompted), login as root and type
install (setup??) at the # prompt.
I cannot remember off-hand where I obtained the _disk sets_ to download
(www.cdrom.com, I
think)...anybody??
