Folks:
Okay, I've had this problem for months, seemingly corresponding with the
2.2 kernels. Started out in SuSE, now RH 6.1. I did _not_ have it with 2.0
kernels, nor with earlier RHs like 4.2.
With PPP, I dial out and connect to my ISP (Concentric). All seems okay. I
go to get mail via fetchmail, and randomly, I apparently stop getting
packets. The send/receive lights on the modem go dead, and eventually
fetchmail times out. I believe this also happens when I surf, but I can't
really tell because I don't surf that much. With email, it almost always
happens when I a lot of byte in email, but sometimes when I don't get much
mail. In other words, it's _erratic_. Also note that I cannot restart
fetchmail and expect it to run properly while still in that ppp session. I
have to hang up and redial before fetchmail will properly start picking up
mail again.
Now, let me eliminate the obvious answers:
I have used programs other than fetchmail, and used several versions of
fetchmail itself. Same behavior on all.
My dialout procedure has been the same since 2.0 kernels. The scripts I
use were created when I was using Debian.
I have checked with my ISP, which runs Unix servers. They say (naturally)
that it isn't their fault. I'm inclined to agree, since others don't
appear to have this problem. In fact, my wife (on Win95) _never_ has this
problem, using my dialup account on the same ISP.
This seems to be some sort of a buffer full kind of problem, as a WAG, but
I really have no idea.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
