I think learning to use Linux is a good experience, which you'll probably
need in order to run Apache and Sendmail. But the other approach that's
worth considering is a router-oriented micro-distro like LRP:

http://www.linuxrouter.org (on this site, if it's up, look for the c0wz
site which is better, something like http://linuxrouter.c0wz.com or perhaps
http://lrp.c0wz.com)

Using a (floppy) disk image created by Charles Stunkeiler (sp?), I had an
old 486/33 16MB RAM no HD up and running as an IP_MASQ gateway in about 15
minutes. To get Sendmail and Apache running, I would buy an old 486 for
the router and set them up on the P166 you describe. Then configure the
LRP gateway to forward those ports.

I think the gateway will not noticeably hinder your game performance.
