There was an article about serial console configuration in Linux
Journal 2-3 years ago. I seem to recall reading of a how-to
on the subject also. check the linux doc project site.
I have not done it but would like to give it a try sometime.
I just did a search on Google for: linux "serial console"
and got lots of hits.
