Basically set up a serial terminal (see serial HOWTO). Make sure the
serial terminal options are iset n your kernel and and make some changes to
the LILO options. Almost a no brainer once you've gotten the serial terminal
working.

There's a serial console document under /usr/src/linux/Documentation and
a serial terminal HOWTO. Beware that the serial console document is old.
You don't have to patch the kernel any more.
