On Bill's book "the road ahead" (I did not buy the book, it was given to me)
he implies that the ideas for a gui to run on top of DOS he "got them" from
when he assisted in the design of MAC OS. (no wonder the similarities on
first versions of both, win - mac)

I heard that Gates stole dos from IBM when he was working for them. Then he
modified it a little and put it out on the market at MS-DOS, instead of
IBM's
PC-DOS. Then he just kept modifing it and then put a gui interface with it,
