Make sure "Apply fonts and colors to non-KDE Apps" in kcontrol Look and
Feel/Themes/Style is not set.
If it's set, KDE will try to impose a common look and feel on all
applications (overriding gtkrc and friends).

KDE can use gtk themes, by the way - if you want to use them, use the
"Legacy Theme Importer" in the System menu in the K menu.

This is no longer true with KDE 2.x.
KDE 2.0 follows the Net WM specification very closely (a window manager
specification that was written up by KDE and GNOME to make them better
interoperable).

kwin (which obsoletes kwm) still implements some features the Net
specification doesn't support, like the "?" button for QWhatsThis style
help in applications that support it.
