        If you never got as far as the LILO prompt before reboot, then it
is not a case of corrupt files.  I am not sure why booting off the floppy
fixed things so you can boot off the hard drive.  With the errors you got
booting off the floppy, I would be tempted to say your rescue floppy was
bad, or you have some strange hardware problems.
        If you want to check the files, you can run "rpm -Va | less" or
"rpm -Va > /tmp/check" and "less /tmp/check" to see what files have
changed from when they were installed.  (You have to run this as root.)
What you are looking for will be checksum changes in programs.  Config
file changes are usualy normal.
        When you can have the machine down for a while, you should
consider running some hardware tests on it.  Probable memtest86 and
voltage outputs on the power supply whould be a good start.
