Steven,
        Let me see if I have this correct.  You can boot off a boot
floppy, and it boots using the root file system off the hard drive?
The error sounds like your BIOS settings for the hard drive changed.
Here is what the docs say LI means:

LI   The first stage boot loader was able to load the second stage boot
     loader, but has failed to execute it. This can either be caused by a
     geometry mismatch or by moving /boot/boot.b without running the map
     installer.

You can also check the LILO files by doing "rpm -V lilo".  If you get the
prompt back with no messages, all is well.  If not, re-install LILO.
