Not only that, but if you use gdm/kdm to manage logins, there's a shutdown option right there on the screen after you logout. My machine will power down when the OS tells it to, so I just select Shutdown on the gdm System menu, turn off the monitor, and walk away. The computer will turn off by itself when the shutdown process is complete. Obviously, if you're running on older hardware, shutting down properly each time can get to be a pain, but recovering from backup is worse. Tony -- Anthony E.
