If it is a SCSI device, in the directory /dev you have the st0, st1... . I use a SCSI tape and I use /dev/st0 device. I have Redhat 7.0.

Run the 'dmesg' command or watch the /var/log/messages and look for that entry.

You can also try to view the /proc/devices file. (but I'm not sure if a tape device is listed in that file)
