That's not right. /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/chat-ppp0 is what you
want to see. Something is very wrong there.
rpm -V initscripts
See if you get any errors. I can't imagine how that is happening,
and I've never heard of a bug that causes that to happen, so I
have to assume that the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-ppp
file is corrupted somehow.
You might consider checking the errata for 4.2 (http://www.redhat.com/errata/)
and making sure you have the latest initscripts; the upgrade might fix it
if the problem is indeed file corruption.
