I have another problem with modems which is not ppp related but would

When using minicom i can ATZ and ATDT9, etc but cannot get any OK response
as ATQ and ATE commands fail.
If I go and make some tea (or coffee) then when I come back the AT
commands all now work as expected.
Having established that this is not ppp or tea related I am not sure what
to to next (Buy an internal modem?)
Any help would be appreciated as I've spent over a day on this so far.

Do you have anything like mgetty waiting for an incoming phone call?
Sometimes, it may not clear the modem fast enough, so your first attempt at
dialing out fails. Then it finally clears, and your outgoing modem commands
work.
