1) RHL 4.2 comes with ppp scripts already set up for its self, if you got
a new versions of pppd those scripts should work, they are (or should
be) in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts and be named ifup-ppp,
ifcfg-ppp0, and chat-ppp0. It sounds like you are using the scripts
that everyone else uses, which is fine, Simply that RedHat's
Network configurator will not know about them.
2) Try posting your ppp-on and ppp-on-dialer, perhaps there is a odd
control charecter in a file that is getting sent to the modem.
3) Try dialing your ISP from minicom to make sure your modem works,
the Linux kernel may have autodected something that isn't incorrect.
Also note what it is you do when dialing into your ISP, do you have to
enter a username and password then start ppp with a command? OR do you
just dial your ISP and ppp is just assumed and started as soon as the
modems handshake? Does your chat script do what you just did?
4) Get the isapnptools package (I guess from redhat or sunsite, I don't
have a PnP system) or at minimum boot Win95 and look at what all the
setings for your COM ports are and see if they match what Linux
reports. The isapnptools will help you set up you serial ports under
Linux as well as your Ethernet Card, which you do need to know the IRQ
and I/O base for, perhaps the driver can autoprobe the card?
5) What kind of modem are you using? Alll modem of all flavors should
work ok, except for (I think they are made by USR / 3Com) modems called
"Winmodem" which require a special driver that is currently only
availible for Win95.
