I think he would look good in Fenway.

Going back to my original point. To me the quote indicated the Greinke's outta
there when his contract is up. I suppose everyone assumes that nowadays, but to
have it stated so clearly. How does a fan get enthused about this team? They
just can't.

Baseball is very different for many reasons and is nothing like hockey,
basketball, soccer, which are similar in many ways.

It is true that prospects take a lot more time to "season" in MLB than almost
any other major sport. In the NFL, NBA and NHL young prospects are expected to
deliver much more quickly. Look at this kid that the Bruins drafted this year
at 18 years old. He is expected to make the team and contribute next year!

Ray - your boy Carlos Santana was looking like one of the exceptions this
season until he got injured. But even in his case, he is 24 years old and
spent 5 seasons in the minor leagues. I'm not sure why, but baseball seems to
require a higher level of maturity to compete than the other major sports. And
some heralded young prospects never make it over that hump.

Greinke was definitely right, but I think Tom's point is that it is probably a
bad PR move to say that publicly. He needs to spend a little time with Crash
Davis. "We'll just take them one game at a time, and the good Lord willing,
everything will work out."

If there's one thing I've learned from my fantasy baseball league, it's that
overnight sensations are incredibly rare. Players normally seem to need an
up-and-down period before they settle into the majors. Jed Lowrie is one
example, but Pedroia came up for his cup of coffee, and Youk was an up-and-down
guy for years.

So Greinke is probably right.

Zack Greinke, RHP, Royals - It's one thing when fans feel frustrated by
perpetual rebuilding, but when the star pitcher can't take it anymore, it
reaches a whole new level. Greinke questioned the direction of the franchise
when he told the Kansas City Star, in response to a question about the Royals'
top prospects, "There's no reason for me to get real excited about it, because
the chances of more than one of them making a major impact by the time my
contract is up is pretty slim.'' Greinke has two years remaining on his deal.

How do you charge up a fanbase with that sort of player sentiment.
