My tank after about 6 months (not to be crude or anything) smelled like a fart!  Do you have a deep sandbed.  I can't remember what the exact scientific explanation was but it had something to do with my deep sand bed.   My bed was also making bubbles (there were actually bubbles coming from the sandbed).  I can't remember what the remedy was either but I think it was just one of those things that happened and eventually went away.  I do remember doing a few weekly water changes but since then no bad smell.
