Tom,
Out of curiosity, could you give some quick specs. on the system? I read an
article a while ago, which discussed coral propagators, and they all used
deep sand beds (some were 6-8 inches deep). Benefits were many, draw backs
few. However, they were all very large sand beds, hooked to HUGE systems and
had regular large water changes done. They also had a high water turnover
rate. The design most used were sand beds that were built in shallow troughs
and were external from the holding tanks. I am just wondering, if by having
them set up externally, if the beds fair better because they do not have as
much detritus settling directly on them.....

If you could take a couple of minutes to explain how you have your system
set up, that would be great.

TIA
Shane C.

I have a hard time believing that a TWO inch LIVE sand bed killed
all those
fish and inverts, something else was at play. After sixteen years of

reefkeeping, I still haven't seen it all, so it's POSSIBLE (anything
is) but
        I doubt it.
Most pro reefkeepers don't even consider 2 inches a deep sand bed. I

understand that what works for 1 doesn't always work for others,
but, I have
between 150 and 200 corals go through my systems EVERY MONTH, plus
fish
feedings, plus Clams, Acros, and everything else, all have a three
inch +
deep bed, and a 90 gallon with a plenum in tandem, never had a
problem
attributable to sand, and nitrates are UNDETECTABLE. I wouldn't put

thousands of $$$ worth of coral, clams, etc. in there if I wasn't
sure.
Anyway, good luck, keep us all posted,
               Tom
