I have a hard time believing that a TWO inch LIVE sand bed killed all those
fish and inverts, something else was at play. After sixteen years of
reefkeeping, I still haven't seen it all, so it's POSSIBLE (anything is) but
I doubt it.
Most pro reefkeepers don't even consider 2 inches a deep sand bed. I
understand that what works for 1 doesn't always work for others, but, I have
between 150 and 200 corals go through my systems EVERY MONTH, plus fish
feedings, plus Clams, Acros, and everything else, all have a three inch +
deep bed, and a 90 gallon with a plenum in tandem, never had a problem
attributable to sand, and nitrates are UNDETECTABLE. I wouldn't put
thousands of $$$ worth of coral, clams, etc. in there if I wasn't sure.
Anyway, good luck, keep us all posted,
       Tom
