hmmm....I tried using a distiller for a little while for some discus I kept
before my reef tank.  I live in Indiana, where our dissolved solids content
is 600 ppm+!  Within 2 weeks of starting my distiller, the whole thing was
coated in calcium carbonate scale that even vinegar soaks wouldn't remove.
I now use a Kent Maxxima HiS unit.  I still have to change the resin pretty
often because our water is terrible, but it's a lot more maintenance free.
If you don't have hard water problems where you live, there are still some
other concerns.  I've been led to believe that distilling is not as good as
RO for removing some harmful items (I think silicate was one problem, and
I've also heard that distilled water can still contain copper).  Probably
safer to go with the RO/DI unit.
