Hi Paul,
My reef is 150 (UK) gallons and I dose kalkwasser and have a CO2 reactor...
I personally only add kalkwasser in the night to keep my Ph stable and help
a little bit with the calcium consumption of my mainly hard coral tank.
I use a Ratz Kalkwasser stirrer to add my kalkwasser. It comes on twice per
24hrs to 'stir' the kalkwasser and I have a peristatic pump on an X10 unit
from my neptune set to come on for 20mins every 2 hours over the lights off
period. This adds about 3 litres of top up (RO) water through the kalkwasser
reactor and into my tank. It keeps the Ph stable at about 8.4 (according to
my neptune computer). I have it set up so that if the Ph goes above 8.5 it
will not put any more water in through the Ratz. The rest of my topup water
is plain RO, that is added by a pump, controlled on a float switch.
Don't add 5 gals at once, well not quickly anyway. You could drip it in
slowly over night... then it won't affect your Ph too much!!!??
Before I got the kalkwasser reactor I used an icecream tub with some air
line attached through the base with a tap on the end. I suspended it above
my sump. I would mix kalkwasser in a 5 gal drum and take out 2 gals a day
for the home made kalkwasser 'dripper' and set it dripping after lights out.
It would take about five hours to empty over night...not affecting the Ph to
much.
Hope this helps
Jules
