You are trying to setup a refugium. It will work. I think It can help to reduce nitrates, but the main reason is a place to keep microfauna alive there and save for all the predators in your tank.
I am not an expert, so you will get alot of comments on this list.

hello, I�m planning to install a 10 gal tank below my "big" tank, connected
