Andrew:
Is there a giant skimmer in the ocean? Does God make water changes on the
ocean? I must have missed that one! Can you imagine seeing this huge hand
holding a huge bucket dipping into the ocean? hahaha Seriously though, if
our tanks were exactly like the ocean, we wouldn't need half the stuff we
have! The fact of the matter is that we have a very, very small part of the
ocean. We use this special equipment because we are trying to simulate
something which is almost impossible to simulate in such a very small scale.
That being the case, we need much different things (equipment) to help do
the almost impossible. Sometimes we can institute somewhat natural methods
like live rock and caulerpa to help rid our tanks of the build up of toxins
which would never be a problem in the much larger ocean. I have kept a
saltwater reef for about 7 years now. A lot of the things I now use were
from trial and error as with most of us. I am constantly learning new
things as we all should. I like to keep an open mind because who really
knows the "best" setup? Even the scientists who have made it their life to
study these things argue about what you should or should not do, use, etc.
P.s. other comments below:

I was a biology major, and I have seen a million microscopic organism under
the scope. We used UV to sterlize glassware etc. Yes, UV is an
indescriminate killer in my tank, but only if it is free floating. Most of
the bacteria and other microscopic organisms I care about aren't going to go
through it.

My tank is far from sterile. lol If you want, I can post a few picture of
my corals. My favorite is my green moonstone which is at least the size of
half of a volleyball. It started off the size of a golf ball if that. I
also have lots of white fairy toadstools which split on a regular basis. I
give them away for free. Do you want one? I could go on.....I guess I
didn't like your tone. :o)
I guess the short version is, have an open mind. What works for you isn't
the only or necessary the best way. The same applies to me and everyone
else I think we all wish that there was a definite best and only way, but
we are not there yet.
Sorry for the long post.
