Sand bed depth is always a highly debated subject so Inland
Aquatics states on their web site "the sand bed should be as deep as the

yep that is BS, no netting required. If the bed is deep
enough then the
infauna will not reach the
bottom. A good depth is 4-6", you will want all
fine sand. Having larger grain sand is not a good idea, the
larger sand
will move up the bed until it is on the
top.
To build a DSB you simply add the sand to the tank after you
have saltwater
in it and then add your live rock or
whatever to start the cycle. As early
as you can
find them, you should star adding various species of macroalgaes
to control nussiance algae and provide nutrient export.
After the cycle is
over(usually a month or 2, unless
you get cured rock) add detritivore kits
from
www.ipsf.com and www.inlandaquatics.com, and also trade some sand with
a local reefer if possible. This will provide the
necessary critters(found
somewhat on live rock) that
eat detritus( fish crap) and aerate the sand.
After
this you should hold off on fish for a month or 2(wish i had done
this) in order to establish your fauna population. It
is imperative to feed
during these months, critters
need to eat too! After a month or so of
feeding
your fishless reef it is safe to add fish. A DSB prohibits some
animals, any type of sandsifting goby, sand star, etc.
These creatures are
preying on your infauna population
while not effectively "stirring" your
sand. A
mandarin dragonette is also a bad choice, unless you have a
refugium that can support its immense appetite for copepods. A
new pamphlet
is coming out on DSB, in a month or
so. I would encourage you to pick it
up, its
called "Deep Sand Bed Secrets"
