I've done work for a non-profit and a company that is an LLC and they both provide 1099s. I've also had my taxes worked on by one of the H&R people and they asked where the 1099's were that supported my revenue. When I told them that not all my clients sent me one they were a bit surprised and even more surprised that I was still claiming the income.
