There's only one answer to this, IMO.

I've run into situations where someone other than the client "owned" the
domain. and/or the hosting, and/or the facebook account, etc.

As far as I'm concerned, the client should own everything we do for them.
Not only is this ethical, but it provides for the client in the case of the
developer getting hit by a bus.

Here's how I make this happen:

New client:
* set up a new Gmail account for them.
* All additional setups - dns, hosting, feedburner, social media setups.
etc. use this email to register
* Google Analytics and Feedburner code grabbed from this account
* Client has access to Gmail account, therefore has access to all other
accounts moving forward

This has been foolproof for me. Eager to hear other options as well.
